When a tooth has undergone many treatments and fractures, or suffered severe decay, the soft tissue pulp inside the tooth that contain the nerves can easily develop an infection through bacteria. This can cause extreme pain for the patient and if the affected tooth is not treated, the patient can develop an abscess and also lose the tooth.
Root canal treatment is a delicate procedure which can be performed here, however complex cases may require a referral to a specialist Endodontist. It involves cleaning out the root canals inside the tooth removing all the bacteria and then resealing to prevent any further bacteria entering. Root canal treatment is usually performed over two visits to our private dental practice but does have a high success rate. After treatment, the tooth is usually weaker and our dentist may need to carry out further restoration such as creating a new dental crown for added protection.
